FALKIRK'S Helix environmental project will involve lots of community participation during 2008.

People will have a chance to say how they would like to contribute to the initiative, which will start to take shape in 2009.

The judges who made the final decision to give The Helix the mammoth award were impressed with the huge amount of community input and with suggestions of how the project should be developed. In 2008 you will have your chance to influence the future plans.

The total cost of the project is £46 million and, along with the Lottery cash, the partners have also pledged funding. Falkirk Council's director of community services (Maureen Campbell), said the priority for 2008 would be to secure the remaining £9 million required from the Scottish Government and external funding bodies.

In the first few months of the year The Helix Trust, which will take forward the project, will also be set up.

Ms Campbell said: "Everyone is very excited about the project. This is one of the most exciting projects for the area in terms of a real, visible transformation. Everyone has an idea of what they want to see – whether is is a quiet place to go, somewhere exciting for the kids to play or a cycleway to take them to work quicker.

"Around 80,000 people will be able to walk or cycle to The Helix so it will have a huge impact on our communities."

She added that a huge number of community groups had already been in touch wanting to be involved in the next stage.

She said: "We will be talking to them about how they can contribute. Throughout 2008 there will be lots of community engagement and visible work on site should start the following year."

Newsflash

AN industrial landscape between Falkirk and Grangemouth is set to be transformed into an inspirational green space which will be open and accessible to all, thanks to a massive £25 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund to the innovative Helix project in Falkirk.

This massive injection of funding, planned to take place over the next six years, will allow the Helix project to radically transform the environment in the Forth Valley as part of the BIG Lottery Fund’s Living Landmarks programme.  This award is the first of its kind in Scotland through this programme, and the largest ever awarded by BIG to individual projects so far.
