It's summer and one of the best places to be is glorious Muiravonside Country Park.
Visitors young and old can enjoy 170 acres of beautiful woods and parkland, the beautiful River Avon winding through a spectacular gorge, a visitor centre, cafe and New Parks
Farm with its wide range of domestic animals, including some rare breeds.
Now Falkirk Council has added a major new attraction to the park, the Muiravonside Outdoor Education Centre which will offer an exciting programme of activities all year round for individuals, groups, local organisations and schools.

Lying in the heart of the Park, the new centre has been created in what was once a working water mill on the bank of the Avon. The mill's old water wheel is still intact and the building has been carefully restored.

Redevelopment of the derelict mill and the creation of the Outdoor Education centre was made possible with the help of a grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

The project has provided lecture facilities, ample storage and drying facilities (for clothing and equipment) and modern changing and showering facilities.

Encouraging outdoor activity is part of Falkirk Council's commitment to Feel Good Falkirk, the health improvement plan for the whole community.

The centre will also fulfil an important educational role through programmes like Active Steps which aims to get young people involved in healthy physical exercise.

"Muiravonside is a wonderful asset for the whole community," said Councillor Tom Coleman, Convener of Education and Leisure Services. "The new Outdoor Education Centre offers everyone the chance to explore and enjoy activities in the great outdoors with expert advice. It will be an excellent new asset for all our schools and for people throughout the Falkirk Council area."

OUTDOOR EXPERTISE
The Outdoor Team at Muiravonside is creative and imaginative in the programmes they provide.

The team, which has considerable expertise, aims to provide high quality activities, tailored to the needs and requirements of people seeking outdoor adventure.
They offer outdoor days which are exciting, action-packed and,
sometimes, challenging.

All instructors are fully accredited in the activities they deliver, holding national governing body qualifications.

Many of the activities are overseen by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority which ensures stringent checks are carried out on staff qualifications, equipment, facilities and venues used.

The team also try to offer accreditation for some activities and work with people on national awards like the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

On offer is a great range of outdoor activities from gentle rambles to more challenging activities like blow karting and power kiting. Most of the activity sites are just a short walk away from the Outdoor Centre so people taking part can make full use of the available time.

Teambuilding activities are an important aspect of the activities on offer. Choose from a straightforward multi-activity day, with the emphasis on fun and packing as much as possible into the time available - climbing, canoeing, raft building, mountain biking, problem-solving challenges, rock climbing, abseiling, ski-ing (snow and dry slope), orienteering, kayaking (river and sea), tandem biking, hillwalking, power kiting, rambles, high tops and navigation as well as holiday programmes and residential trips.

Newsflash

AN industrial landscape between Falkirk and Grangemouth is set to be transformed into an inspirational green space which will be open and accessible to all, thanks to a massive £25 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund to the innovative Helix project in Falkirk.

This massive injection of funding, planned to take place over the next six years, will allow the Helix project to radically transform the environment in the Forth Valley as part of the BIG Lottery Fund’s Living Landmarks programme.  This award is the first of its kind in Scotland through this programme, and the largest ever awarded by BIG to individual projects so far.
